Overcome Dental Fear and Anxiety

First, know that if your behaviour has been driven by this kind of fear and anxiety, you are not alone. Dental fear and anxiety, according to dentists I’ve spoken to, is more widespread than one might think. Common reasons for dental fear and anxiety include…

  • fear of pain, often based on a previous unpleasant experience that you don’t necessarily even remember.

  • feeling out of control while lying in the dental chair.

  • fear of needles and/or injections.

  • the sounds, smells, and sensations that you associate with dental procedures.

  • embarrassment about the condition of your teeth.

  • a previous traumatic dental or medical experience.

  • general anxiety or panic disorder.

Hypnotherapy can effectively replace your fear and anxiety with an overall calm sensation, sense of control, and well-being. It is life-changing for many people. It may sound like a far-fetched dream at this point, and I would understand your skepticism if you have it, but a quick Google-search will provide ample evidence of the efficacy of hypnotherapy to overcome fear, anxiety and even pain related to dental procedures. It’s even been reported to have reduced pain, bleeding, and to have shortened wound recovery time.

Hypnotherapy should not be considered a “quick fix”. It will require you to do your part as well; think of it as a collaboration. The number of sessions you will need will depend on your situation, including how deeply rooted the fear and anxiety is and how receptive to change you are. On average clients need three sessions for the effects of hypnotherapy to be strongly anchored. You may fall into that category or you may need more.
